Kellogg’s Pop-Tarts are Florida’s Favourite Hurricane Food!

Big Data can reveal amazing insights into your business. According to DMA acting CEO Linda Woolley, keynote speaker at the DMA 2012 Las Vegas Conference, Big Data has recently revealed to Walmart that when a hurricane is expected in the sunshine state of Florida sales of Kellogg’s Pop-Tarts dramatically rise. Yes if the electric is down you can eat them cold!!

Walmart saw the data and was able to advise Kellogg’s to ship more strawberry Pop-Tarts to Florida as soon as a hurricane warning was announced. Big Data is helping marketers to spot trend and get the right items to the right location at the right time. Big Data gives marketers the opportunity to collect, analyse and use information to predict customer intent.

The scope of the data is huge, 2.7 zettabytes this year alone (A ‘zettabyte’ is a 1 followed by 21 zero’s). There are new technologies and tools for analysing data. But now more than ever before data is key to the success of your business. We are all different, we all like different things and most of us find it annoying if companies talk to us about products or services that we clearly have no interest in or that are irrelevant to our lives!

Chris Anderson of Wired, also at the DMA 2012 conference says ‘Big Data allows you to forget the theory and throw enough data at questions allowing patterns to emerge’. Whilst some companies are using Big Data to reveal new and exciting opportunities for their business, others are still in the data capture dark ages.
