In a recent article published by McKinsey Insights entitled “Why marketers should keep sending emails” it is claimed that email remains a significantly more effective way to acquire customers than social media – nearly 40 times that of Facebook or Twitter combined.

91% of all US consumers still use email daily and the rate at which emails prompt purchase is not only estimated to be at least three times that of social media, but the average value is also 17% higher. The number of Britons who go online on a daily basis has more than doubled since 2006 to 36 million.

But like press advertising or any form of communication, there is good email and bad email. In fact there is also appalling email where every rule of segmentation, personalisation, relevance and timing is ignored.
