Simply Magical
I’m not a fan of Harry Potter myself. That’s not to say I don’t like the books, character or films. Perhaps the craze just passed me by. But seeing the premise through my children’s eyes has been quite an experience. So as a special treat for the kids, the Sunday before last we visited Harry Potter Studios in Leavesden.
If I had to sum up the visit, in just one word, I would say ‘inspirational’. From the scale, set and costume design through to the physical experience of being in ‘the Great Hall’ and ‘Diagon Alley’, a trip to Hogwarts is an experience to remember forever.
In this industry we speak of design in many ways. Often unique design, often great design. Ideas, concepts and creativity. At the studios you will find such design in abundance. The sets themselves feel both real and magical, and remember I am no true fan, so I can say these things with honest objectivity. The characters, costumes and props are other-worldly; dark by design and lifelike by detail. Talking of detail, where else could you see a room of magic wands, each dedicated to every person ever involved with such a large scale creation as the eight-part strong Harry Potter film chronicles?
Since this visit I have felt compelled to share, with anyone who will listen, the wonderment that the whole experience evoked. To my children as true fans of a world brought to life so cleverly via concept and detailed design, and to me an experience of such an awesome (in its truest sense) vision delivered by so many talented and creative thinkers. To step into the world of Harry Potter is to step into a world of genuine alchemy. Consider me a convert!
