Tower Poppies

I’d challenge anyone not to be moved by the incredible sight currently evolving by the day at the Tower of London, where 888,246 ceramic poppies are being planted in the Tower’s moat, each one marking a British military fatality during the First World War.

The installation named ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ marks the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War in a truly awe inspiring and emotion laced way. Since its launch on 5th August it has evolved as a team of volunteers carefully plant each poppy, with the last poppy being planted on Armistice Day. The poppies have been created by ceramic artist Paul Cummins and his team and have been planted to a design created by set designer Tom Piper who has truly captured the title of the installation; it does indeed look like a sea of blood and is theatrical and dynamic in its design.

The poppies are fast becoming as much of a tourist attraction as the Tower itself and appeal across the generations. Personally I’d say that no visit to London is complete without seeing them at the moment. Catch them while you can however as after 11th November they are all being removed, cleaned and shipped to their new owners who have bought a poppy for charity.
