A visit to the SACHS Museum
LAW Creative has recently been appointed to work with SACHS, a global manufacturer of high-quality dampers, shock absorbers and clutches.
A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of visiting the SACHS Museum in Schweinfurt Germany. When working with a new client, research into their brand and business tends to come from a mixture of internet trawling and employee interviews. It’s not often that clients have their own museum but it’s testament to the amazing heritage that the SACHS brand enjoys.
And far from being a ‘stuffy and traditional’ museum, it’s a fascinating and interactive experience with a very modern feel. In fact, the SACHS museum won the German Design Award 2016 in the category ‘Excellent Communications Design – Architecture’, an award that ranks among the world’s most prestigious design competitions.
On an exhibition space of 850 square metres, the museum is divided into four main sections. In the first section, visitors are taken on a journey through the company’s history, from its foundation in 1895 to the merger with ZF Friedrichshafen AG in 2011. The second section focuses on a variety of technical milestones in bicycle hubs, engines, suspension and drive components. The third section highlights the special relationship SACHS has with motorsports, from the Dakar Rally to modern day F1. The fourth section then looks to the future, showcasing lightweight construction and electric drive technology, which ZF is pioneering at the Schweinfurt location.
The SACHS Museum provided a rich and unique insight into the brand, and from a research perspective has been invaluable in developing our understanding of the heritage and future direction of the business.
If you’re a motor enthusiast, I would highly recommend a visit.
