A graphic design ‘Pick Me Up’

As a graphic designer you always need inspiration. So what better way to spend a bank holiday Monday than at the annual Pick Me Up Festival at the beautiful Somerset House on London’s The Strand.

Now in its fifth year, this contemporary graphic arts festival has always interested me. A showcase of graphic art in all its forms; it’s fun and informal, and features quirky studio spaces over two floors in which to shop for affordable art or just peruse for as long as you fancy.

Graphic Design Pen PotThis year seemed to me to be bigger and better than what had gone before. Room after room of great design and illustration, it was mesmerising. Such a wide range was represented, from graphic design, to fashion and architecture, to comic books and album covers. And, not ignoring the social media marketing world we now live in, you could ‘like’ or ‘hashtag’ almost everything there.

One artist in particular caught my eye, Julia Pott, and half an hour later, after checking out her mobile website, I had purchased two of her cute prints.

But it wasn’t just about the vast array of graphic design on show. With a daily, lively line-up of events, the festival encouraged both budding and bonafide artists of all ages to get involved.

With so much inspiration on show, I was bursting to get back to the LAW studio, to put pencil to paper.
