Hidden gems in NYC

Hidden gems in NYC

On a recent short trip to the Big Apple, as well as ticking off the well-known sights, I sought to hunt out a few hidden gems, breaking away from the average tourist sights – only possible through insider knowledge and word-of-mouth local recommendations.

Manhattan has been described as the ‘economical and cultural centre of the United States’ and that’s easy to believe when there is so much on offer and in such a compact grid of space.

As a well-travelled designer with a keen eye for colour, architecture and juxtaposition; I am always intrigued to dig that little bit deeper, go that little bit further and find that perfect angle which enriches my experience and allows me to capture a great memory. In hope of inspiring you all, here are my top three secret finds from my trip:

  1. Beauty & Essex – Posing as an unassuming pawn shop in Downtown Manhattan, this popular venue evokes the days of prohibition. As you head straight through the store past glass cabinets packed full of trinkets and random musical instruments hanging on the walls, you may feel a little overdressed in your cocktail attire. However, once you walk through the back door you step into an amazing sparkling restaurant with a fantastic glitzy cocktail bar. Magical!
  2. Lady Liberty’s Crown – A trip over to Liberty Island isn’t complete without climbing the 200+ steps up inside the great statue herself, to peer out of her crown over to the Manhattan skyline. As well as the impressive views you can also see first-hand the text inscribed on the tablet Lady Liberty holds – 4th July 1776, the date of America’s Declaration of Independence.
  3. Museum – A tiny contemporary art gallery housed in a disused elevator shaft in an alleyway near Chinatown. This random and unique little space is packed full of ‘found items’ as a statement on modern society. When ‘Museum’ is shut, you can peer inside through a tiny peep hole – if you can find the right door!
